disciplines that are not anchored in science easily turn into fads, what are we doing to advance research in KM?

KM is currently in an early stage of scientific development. All science begins by detecting and then observing patterns in nature (in this case, human and organizational behavior). This is followed by classification of different patterns (going all the way back to Aristotle). Pre-science involves empirical studies that measure phenomena and how they are distributed. Statistics then tells us something about apparent relationships between phenomena. Finally, we get to science, in which cause-and-effect relations are demonstrated with a high degree of certainty (notice that I didn't say proven!). Scientific knowledge is, then, an understanding of cause-and-effect relations that enable predicting phenomena with a known degree of certainty. Given that KM is still emerging as a discipline (3 generations in 2 decades), the bulk of KM remains in the classification stage. We are starting to measure KM, which moves the leading edge of KM into the pre-science empirical and statistical phases. I am personally working on linking knowledge management to business strategies and developing structured knowledge services to support unstructured knowledge work. But these are really "case studies" - empirical constructs of how we think things actually work. In a nutshell, we don't yet know enough about KM to study it scientifically. As a former scientist, this doesn't bother me; it's the natural order of things. How many centuries did it take to transform planetary observations into laws of planetary motion? And knowledge management is so much more complex than that.

The problem of “KM legitimate” depended mostly on the status of Knowledge within the stage of current evolution of Science. Currently Knowledge, so does also KM, becoming prominent sparehead in the evolution of Science after Data-Information finishing their main role during the last two decades.

The following two articles generated from SNS http://mobeeknowledge.ning.com to somewhat extend answering the issue of Knowledge and/or KM in the era of Scientific post-modernism

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IS NOT PSEUDO SCIENCE : KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IS KNOWLEDGEABLE SCIENCE

This article intended to comment on Patrick Lambe’s article (22/12/09) at the link http://www.greenchameleon.com/gc/blog_detail/is_km_a_pseudoscience/

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IS KNOWLEDGEABLE SCIENCE

• Science currently in the process of evolution towards era in which Data and Information as its backbone shifted to Knowledge and beyond. The emphazing in Knowledge as science come up with Scientific Knowledge as term to defend its nature of Science applied to KM

• But, in my view, the nature of Knowledge totally different with Data or Information. In the process of Knowledge formation, Knowledge is evolved as emergent behavior within human body as complex system, having consciousness and free will (mind and value) as well as behaving dynamically as subject. Here, Data and Information still an object, pasive, static and having no consciousness. This is the overlying condition why KM seems in the grey area, treated as pseudo science and still difficult for us to define KM universally accepted.(Visit http://mobeeknowledge.ning.com/forum/topics/we-are-the-knowledge-hy... - WE ARE THE KNOWLEDGE : HYBRID DEFINITION OF KNOWLEDGE).

• The shifting paradigm of Knowledge will open towards new era in which Scientific Knowledge could becoming “Knowledgeable Science” where we're no longer rely absolutely to “deducto-hypothetico-verificative” as our scientific mind set.The "evidence-based", "reverse engineering" or even “gnosis” method as well will complement that “old” mind set where we could “Doing by Learning” instead of “Learning by Doing” as commonly believed (visit http://mobeeknowledge.ning.com/forum/topics/the-future-of-learning-... - THE FUTURE OF LEARNING : WILL IT BE PARADIGM SHIFT FROM “LEARNING BY DOING” TOWARDS “DOING BY LEARNING” ?)

• To conclude, KM seems is here to stay (visit http://mobeeknowledge.ning.com/forum/topics/five-basic-implications... - FIVE BASIC IMPLICATIONS OF NEW PARADIGM OF KNOWLEDGE).

• KM also should adjust its position regarding the race between human and the machine (technology) reaching its peak a.k.a singularity in exponentially way around 2012. After it is achieved around 2012 (?), it will be the “Jump Time” for us to make “Great Turning” from the BRAIN as locus of Mind to the DNA as locus of Consciousness and Value”. How KM and the organization will adjust to new era? Should you Visit http://mobeeknowledge.ning.com/forum/topics/knowledge-towards-2012-... - KNOWLEDGE TOWARDS 2012 : GREAT TURNING FROM MIND BRAIN TO CONSCIOUSNESS DNA

• The evidence of the issues mentioned above certainly do not put KM behaving as pseudo science whatsoever. On the contrary, from KM view some “malfunctioned” or “maltreated” sciences a.k.a Pseudo Science could be called as Pseudo Knowledge

* Knowledge management and science are two very different things and should not be confused. My comments are based on having worked at implementing KM in a number of science-based government agencies. Science focuses on creating new knowledge whereas KM focuses on leveraging the outputs of science to benefit an organization. * There are many kinds of knowledge, one of which is scientific knowledge. The advantage of scientific knowledge is the strength of it's experimental validation. The disadvantage is it's narrow focus. * Although science has produced much knowledge over tha last four centuries, there are many problems that it cannot solve. We need all kinds of knowledge to run a society. * Knowledge management can be considered as an applied science, to the same extent as "management science." * In my opinion, the expression "knowledgeable science" is almost a tautology.
