Welcome to the new KMers.org!
We are happy to announce our latest revision of KMers.org! The site has been long ready for a much-needed update and today we are rolling out a complete design overhaul. We decided that a redesign had to revolve around a couple of core points:
Focus on the recurring user
Most likely, that means you! On the old site it was very hard to quickly figure out what had happened recently. The blocks on the right now display the latest activity. There is one place for the latest blog post. The chat events now get all the attention they deserve.
Put chat events front and center
Many of our visitors come to KMers just for the most recent or upcoming chat event. We have now made it much easier to retrieve that information. The most recent chat event and first upcoming event are displayed directly on the front page. And when a chat transcript is added to an event, this is clearly marked. The third tab is dedicated to a live #kmers stream. All the information you need with only click away!
Reduce the information, group it where possible
On the old site different types of content were mixed together on the front page, creating a very long, content-rich, and confusing experience. There were also quite a number of information blocks on the right that contained very different types of information. We have taken similar types of content and grouped them together under tabs. This makes it much easier for you to browse that information, without getting an information overload.
More compact design
Most of the important information is now ‘above the fold’. This means that you don’t have to scroll if you are looking for something. The header is thinner, the KMers explanation pane has been moved to the top-left (by clicking the “Where am I?” link) and the length of the front page has been drastically reduced.
Advertising
KMers is supported and developed by weknowmore.org. All their efforts are without any cost to the community. Therefore, we felt it reasonable to give these organizations some credit. One the top right of any page there is now a advertisement banner.
We also want to open this space up for other organizations that would like to sponsor KMers.org. The proceeds will all flow back into the community and website.
Currently, the banner only displays weknowmore.org. If you or your organization is interested in sponsoring KMers, please contact @weknowmore or @swanwick
Feedback
We hope you like the new and revised KMers website. It is possible that this website contains bugs or that it is missing things. Please let us know if you find anything that you would like to see changed. You can contact us through @weknowmore or e-mail coo@kmers.org!
